TEXTO ORIGINAL:
"While other students went back to class this week, Rotorua's home-schooled children took to the water.
About 15 families got together for a "Not Back to School" lunch at Lake Okareka yesterday.
Home school mum and event planner Elizabeth Pilaar said the event was for parent support and a social activity for children.
"On Tuesday afternoons we regularly have events, they are social for the children and support for mums.
"Sometimes [home schooling] is hard and it supplies support, today we've probably got about 15 families here."
She said she had an email list of about 50 families in Rotorua who she invited to attend the home schooling events but said there were still more in the area.
Mrs Pilaar said she home-schooled because it was an investment in her children's and family's future. "I have three children who are all home-schooled.
"My husband has a good saying - home schooling is not a picnic but it is a feast.
"If you put the effort in you reap the rewards."
Mrs Pilaar said home schooling had a very flexible curriculum.
"The only requirement is you teach as much and as well as at school."
Home schooler Joe Watson, 14, said he was home schooled all his life and still enjoyed it.
"It's just easier, at home you can grab food out of the fridge and chill out at home."
He said his mother was his teacher and that relationship worked really well.
"Yeah, people tell me their teachers suck but it's just mum at home, and it's all good for me."
The Ministry of Education helps fund home education through a home schooling supervisory allowance.
Home Education New Zealand's website included the following as factors for choosing home education for children - richer experience of family, closer sibling relationships, individually designed education and a flexible lifestyle.
For parents the interest can be increased family bonding, learning with and about your child, time to parent and peace of mind.
HENZ reported home education generally had very high academic records."
